The replacement cycle for gel electrodes depends on the type, frequency of use, and maintenance methods, and cannot be generalized. Here are specific guidelines for different situations:

 

1. Lifespan by Electrode Type

Disposable Gel Electrode Pads: For single use only (usually once). Discard after use to avoid decreased conductivity or cross-contamination risks.

Reusable Gel Electrode Pads: With proper maintenance, they can generally be used 5–30 times; some high-quality products can last up to 50 times.

Home Use: If used once daily with proper maintenance, the lifespan is approximately 2–4 weeks.

High-Frequency Use in Rehabilitation Institutions: It is recommended to replace after 15–25 uses to ensure treatment accuracy.

 

2. Three Signs That Indicate Replacement is Needed

Replace immediately even if the product has not reached its recommended usage period if any of the following conditions occur:

Decreased Adhesion: The electrode edge lifts more than 2mm, or falls off naturally within 10 minutes of application;

Weakened Conductivity: The current feels noticeably weaker, stinging, or intermittent at the same setting, indicating that the internal impedance has exceeded the limit;

Surface Damage or Cracking:The gel layer appears yellowed, blackened, has dry lines, cracks, or residual oil stains (diameter > 5mm).

 

3. Key Methods to Extend Product Lifespan

Post-Use Cleaning: Gently wipe the gel surface with water to remove skin oils and allow it to air dry (do not wipe with paper towels);

Sealed Storage: After reattaching the release paper, place it in the original packaging or a sealed bag and store in a cool, dry place, avoiding direct sunlight;

Controlled Single Use Duration: It is recommended that each use not exceed 8–12 hours. Exceeding this time will lead to accelerated moisture loss and a decrease in adhesion of more than 30%.
